Opening Up the Music by Listening
Within the Space Between the Notes

“The notes I handle no better than many pianists. But the pauses between the notes – ah, that is where the art resides!”

“Most rock journalism is people who can’t write interviewing people who can’t talk for people who can’t read.”
“All the good music has already been written by people with wigs and stuff.”
- Frank Zappa (1940-1993)
For me, the story of Frank Zappa’s life is fascinating. The incredible quantity of original work he created, drawn from his own unique understanding of music, and his original vision is deeply inspiring.
My admiration is not based so much on my love for his music. It is rather his approach of reaching inside himself and then manifesting it. He was so confident in his creations that he put together a business model to put them out into the world rather than relying on others to sanctify him and endorse his work.
This proved to be highly profitable for Frank Zappa. Because his economic wellbeing was not so reliant on others, he didn’t need to be so concerned about only creating works that he knew would sell well. Instead he focused on creating in mediums that interested him. Here is a link to a short biography of Frank Zappa where you can also discover why I am so inspired by his life.
